Welcome to Scor-it News, a monthly eNewsletter from the makers of Scor-it Boards and the Scor-it Mini.

In the Spotlight: Teresa Collins - Teresa Collins Designs

In the spotlight this month is Teresa Collins, a nationally-known designer with a line of products that bear her name.  She’s also a mother of five (four still at home), a night owl whose “brain goes into over-drive” after others have headed for bed, and a self-described “normal person” who’s happier talking about scrapbooking than about herself.  She’s endlessly excited about teaching others the joys of her favorite activity, feels lucky to have a career that allows her time with her family and she loves inventing new products.

Teresa Collins has a background in interior design; she always loved to paint and draw, but never thought of herself as talented.  She got into scrapbooking five years ago, when her mother passed away and she suddenly realized that it was time to document her own life as well as the lives of her five children.

Her first project was made during a legacy class at a scrapbook store.  Even though she was a beginner, Teresa wanted to take a different approach from what was planned.  She soon realized that she had something to offer, that she could design products for the scrapbook industry in addition to scrapbooking for her family.  It was one of those “Ah ha!” moments.  She was in her early thirties when she said to herself, “This is a talent I can develop and nurture.”

Teresa’s goal: To take what makes her happy and produce products she feels good about and that others want.  Like the people for whom she designs, Teresa has limited space and time and she wants to get the most for her money.  She likes funky, unique jewelry and she paints her toenails pink, but she’s extremely practical when it comes to buying tools and supplies.

Her short list includes three favorites she uses “over and over to create things in a cost-effective way”: The Scor-it Board, Dream Kuts, and Bind-it-all.  In fact, she likes them so much that she has developed products that coordinate with all of them!  Add some pens (she’s very big into hand writing and journaling) and she’s ready to roll.

Teresa Collins Designs die-cut card and envelope sheets, created for use with the Scor-it Board, were designed with versatility in mind.  “I wanted to give each person all sorts of options - I always tell people ‘make this your own!’” she said.   In addition to quick and easy cards, Teresa likes to use the die cuts for envelope books.

Some of her ideas for the die-cut card and envelope sheets include memory books, guest books, brag books, travel journals, invitations, and of course cards - cards for anniversaries, holidays, birthdays, new babies, girlfriends… And, of course, there are endless ways to embellish and personalize.

When she’s not at her drawing board or on the road teaching, Teresa is with her children, taking them out for milkshakes and one-on-one time.  She doesn’t miss an opportunity to say to them, “I love you more than anything.”  Teresa has found a way to carve a career out of doing what she loves best; it’s a happy balance between work and the rest of her life, and it is something for which she is grateful.

You Asked, We Answer

Q - What’s the difference between the Scor-It Board and other scoring tools?
A -
This is one of our favorite questions. The Scor-it Board is the ONLY scoring tool on the market that allows consumers to make professional-quality hinge score lines, just like printers provide when they do machine scoring. Hinge score lines crease, but do not break or damage the fibers in paper, card stock and chipboard up to 24 pt. - whether you score with or against the grain! The difference is easy to see. The Scor-it brochure, available on our website in the

A - Move your cardstock or paper away from the centering ruler to create diagonal lines for folding, or emboss or de-boss starbursts and the rays from the sun, random diagonals that crisscross to create an interesting background, and so on.  Experiment!  We’d love to see what you come up with!

Learning Center, goes into more detail about the importance of a quality score.

Q - Could you compare the 12” Board with the Mini?
A -
Both boards are quite popular and we’re discovering that many people want both. Those who make cards and smaller projects favor the Mini for its portability and small size. Those who want to score decorative embossed borders, create journaling lines on 12” scrapbook pages or make larger cards and accordion books like the original 12” Scor-it Board.

Q - How should I store the Scor-it Board when I’m not using it?
A -
Stand the board upright, like a book.  It will take very little space on a shelf, less than two inches.  Or store it in a tote bag or box like that in which scrapbook papers are kept. Check out our new Mini Tote bag. One creative friend stores hers in a plastic zipper bag that she’s attached to a skirt hanger!

Q - How do I use the Scor-it Board to score envelopes and boxes?
A -
Move your cardstock or paper away from the centering ruler.  Using a pencil, lightly mark the starting and ending points of the line you want to score on the INSIDE of where you want the fold line to be (the back of the paper or cardstock).  Position the two points along the scoring rule.  Use one hand to hold the project firmly in place and with the other hand use the scoring tool as always - start at the notch at the center of the ruler and pull the tool toward you.  Turn the project and repeat for as many lines as you need to score.  REMINDER: Sometimes no marks are needed.  If you’re scoring one of Teresa Collins’s die-cut envelopes, the corners are clear and obvious.

Q - I can’t decide whether to buy the 12” Scor-it Board or the Scor-it Mini.  Can you help me?
A -
Many people choose the Scor-it Mini because of the smaller size, lower price, and because they make almost exclusively standard size cards, place cards, gift tags and such.  However, if you want to score and fold larger cards, boxes and envelopes or if you want to emboss decorative lines on 8” x 8” or 12” x 12” scrapbook pages then the 12” Scor-it Board is the way to go.  Both can be stored upright in little space, both are lightweight and portable.  We hear that a lot of people who start with one of the boards add the second one later because they want more options.

Fun with the Scor-it Board

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas - The holidays are rapidly approaching!

Whether you’re making a couple of cards or hundreds, the Scor-it Board makes the process easy and fast.  Set the Stop Guide whenever you want to score at the same place again and again - measure once and you’re good to go!

Some ideas to get you started:

Score and fold your base cards and complete any decorative embossed or de-bossed lines in an evening so they are ready for whatever comes next.

If you are making place cards and gift tags, start early and fill in the names closer to the events.

Did You Know?

You can create the look of high end embossed invitations for your holiday parties using the Scor-it Board.  Learn how…

Add Scor-it embossed lines to the invitations you print from a home computer and take them to a whole new level.  A simple border at the top and bottom, a double rule down one side; the possibilities are endless.  Add a low relief (easy to mail) embellishment - ribbon or trim, a small silk flower, and your invitations will rival those from a high end boutique.

The best part: It only takes seconds to emboss beautiful, precise, expensive looking lines on an invitation.  Even if you’re making a hundred or more, you’re done in a snap.

Great Finds!
