This project we featured artist Suzanne Cannnon of QuietFire Design, BC.
The
Scor-itTM Board helped in the creation of her Copper Star Card

Directions for making the Scor-it Copper Star Card

Cut a piece of tan coloured cardstock to 7" x 12" and fold at 4" and 8" so you have 3 panels measuring 4" x 7".
With the cardstock face up, use a pencil to lightly number the panels from the left.

Trim the long edge of Panel 3 by 1/8".

Panel 2 will be the front of the card.

Download the printable star template by clicking here.

Print out the template and cut along the marked line.

Cut a piece of copper to the same size as the template, plus an inch on one side for a handle.

Handle your copper carefully - it's sharp! Don't use your favourite sewing scissors....

Use Magic Removable Tape to attach the template to the copper along the wide edge of the copper.

Begin scoring along the lines of the template. Use the "Feel the Love" technique! Score the box around the outside last. Try not to overshoot (it might take some practice and you may want to work on cardstock first!). If you overshoot the edge of the template, you can use a bone folder to smooth out the copper.

Remove the template.

Trim the copper plate. Yummy!

If you are going to apply this plate to the front of a book, flip the plate over and drizzle white glue into the scored depressions. Allow it to dry (and shrink) and then add some more till the scores are filled.

Cut a piece of dark brown cardstock to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2".

Use Double-Sided Tape to mount the copper star plate to the center of the dark cardstock.

Place your copper plate on a piece of corrugated cardboard and use your awl to pierce holes at the corners of the copper plate. Insert star brads in the corners.

Use Double-Sided Tape to attach the plate and cardstock with brads to Panel 2 about 1 1/2" from the top of the Panel.

Now place the template on Panel 3 and use the Scor-it Board to outline the template. Use the "Feel the Love" technique!

Remove the template

Use your awl to pierce holes at the corners of the embossed star. Insert star brads in the holes.

Fold Panel 3 back onto Panel 2 and use double-sided tape to stick them together. This will hide the backs of all your brads!

On a piece of the darker cardstock, stamp the image with Galaxy Gold Brilliance Ink and emboss with Detail Gold Embossing Powder.

Use your awl to pierce a hole in the card on the upper right edge. Emboss three "starlight" lines streaming down. Insert another star brad in the hole and use double-sided tape to adhere to the card.

Erase the numbers on your panels if you haven't done so already!

Spectacular!

Some interesting variations

Apply some Alcohol Inks to the copper and watch the magic!

Use your Heat Gun (which may or may not be hot enough) or a candle (or a butane torch) under the copper plate. Hold the copper with tongs as it gets hot very quickly. Amazing colours will appear in the copper!

"Feel the Love"
Scoring Technique

Sometimes you want to score a shape or make a line that does not go the full length of your cardstock.

That rail along which you run your scoring tool is the Love!

Using a pencil, lightly draw your lines on the item (cardstock) you wish to score. If you have a template, temporarily adhere it to the cardstock. Use your fingers to feel the rail through the template and cardstock. Align the pencil line or the template so the rail is directly underneath the line you want to score. Take your time and double check! Score only where the line is drawn on the template or card. Be very careful not to run the scoring tool too far. If you're using a template, you can lift up the corner to check without moving the card.
With practice you will have more control and won't "overscore".

Happy Scoring!
