Project - Exploding Box Card

This project we featured artist Holly Craft of Lawrenceville, GA.
The
Scor-itTM board helped in the creation of her Exploding Box Card.

Many paper crafters are intimidated by making boxes, but this is a very simple one. (That is, with the help of a Scor-it!) This design can be used for the holidays or all year long. It is a great favor box for weddings or a great home for my Christmas mice.

Instructions:

These directions make a 2x2x2 inch box, but the measurements could easily be changed to make a different size square box. For the box bottom, take a piece of cardstock that is cut six inches square. With the Scor-it, you will be able to score cardstocks such as mirror card or Dufex cardstock (score on reverse side) that would be normally hard to score.Score the cardstock every two inches in both directions. This will create nine squares on your cardstock. Next, cut off each corner diagonally to make an octogon. To ease the folding, you can score the corners to help in the "explosion". Now, decorate the box with decorative scoring (as opposed to "folding scoring" that was done previously). This will especially show up on the box lid, but can be done on the bottom also. I also like to use metallic rubons on textured cardstock or sand white core cardstock to make the decorative scoring show up even better.

For the lid of the box, take a 4x4 inch piece of cardstock and score just shy of one inch on all four sides. This will allow the box lid to fit over the box. Add decorative score lines as desired. Fold on the original "folding score lines".  There should be a little box in each of the four corners. Cut along just one of the score lines at each corner. Now you will have flaps that can fold inside and hold your lid together. If you have problems with the flap being even with the edge of the lid, you can cut the flap diagonally to create a triangular flap. Use a strong double stick tape to secure each of the four flaps.

The inside of the box can be decorated as I did, with the House Mouse, for a nice surprise when the recipient opens their box card.

Enjoy and happy holidays to each of you!
